Countdown to Christmas: Double the fun at Tuebingen markets
Master chocolatiers from five continents present, sell and compete for top honors at ChocolART, Europe’s largest chocolate festival, now through Dec. 4 in the old town of Tübingen. You do not want to miss this event, named one of the Top 100 Sights of Germany in 2016 by the country's tourism board. RTT Travel at Ramstein Air Base and Information, Tickets & Travel (ITT) at Spangdahlem Air Base are offering day trips to ChocolART Dec. 3.
Less than a week later, the entire town comes alive for an annual weekend Christmas market, where 450 stalls are spread over several locations, providing handmade gifts, treats and children’s programs.
Christmas market dates: Dec. 9-11, 2016
Location: Old town; Krumme Brücke and Kornhausstraße, Marktplatz, Holzmarkt to Neckargasse, Neue Straße, Nonnenhaus
Helpful hints: This market has a large selection of locally produced items by area crafters, schools and organizations. Known as Marke Eigenbau, these DIY vendors offer something different from more commercialized markets.
Beyond the market: On a 1,200-foot-tall hill above town, the 11th century Hohentübingen Castle provides beautiful views of the old town. Now a part of the local university, the castle houses an interesting archaeological museum with artifacts from ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian civilizations. Beware that most of the information plaques are in German only. A quirky alternative is the Boxenstop, a museum collection of vintage cars and antique toys.
Check back tomorrow to find out which European Christmas markets will be featured next as we continue our Countdown to Christmas!
