Savor delicious Vienamese cuisine in Kaiserslautern
I’ve always appreciated the rustic charm a good family-run restaurant endows, and Lila Südvietnamesische Spezialitäten does not disappoint. Tucked away in a back area of downtown Kaiserslautern near the mall, Lila Südvietnamesische Spezialitäten is an impossibly tiny restaurant that offers a wide variety of authentic Vietnamese cuisine at very reasonable prices. Although the interior of the restaurant is slightly cramped, there are takeout options for everything on the menu and seating inside for about 20 people in total. The husband-wife duo who run the establishment are very friendly to both English and German speakers; getting a comprehensive English menu is as easy as simply asking for one.
Lila Südvietnamesische Spezialitäten has everything from succulent summer rolls to savory pho to traditional desserts, all done incredibly well. The Pho Bo broth has the deep fatty flavor of long boiled beef marrow and herbs that work in harmony to complement the rice noodles and vegetables. The Banh Xao holds the integrity of the perfectly done egg while carrying the shrimp and pork as stars of the dish. The summer rolls hold the flavor of the mint leaves and coriander while the texture of the freshly wrapped rice paper and shrimp magnify the sweet peanut sauce that comes with them. The fried spring rolls aren’t greasy or dry, they import crispy texture with well balanced filling that is lightened by the rice vinegar based dipping sauce that accompanies the dish. Simply put, the food at Lila Südvietnamesische Spezialitäten is the best Vietnamese food I’ve had since arriving in Germany. I can’t wait to go back.
