On a whim, my husband and I decided to hop on the train and head into Heidelberg for a day trip. We arrived in town around lunchtime and we were both feeling hunger pangs. We walked into the center of town toward one of our favorite restaurants only to discover it had closed. Disappointed and still hungry, we walked around looking for a place that wasn’t too crowded and was off the beaten path. When we reached the riverfront, we discovered Reichskrone, a Mediterranean restaurant hidden inside a hotel. It didn’t seem too busy, so pizza it was.

When we walked in, we were met with simple, yet elegant décor. The dark wooden tables were covered in familiar red and white-checkered tablecloths. Our server handed us menus, and we were pleasantly surprised. The only items on the lunch menu were pizza, beer, wine and soda. The pizza selection was extensive, ranging from the traditional margherita to a more adventurous pie with seafood, artichokes and kalamata olives. My husband chose a ham, pepperoni, anchovy, pepper and artichoke pizza, while I went with the zesty Pizza Diavolo — complete with spicy salami, pepperoni, onions, peppers and jalapenos.

When the wood-fired pizzas arrived, they looked amazing. The ingredients were fresh, and the tomato sauce had the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. The kitchen didn’t skimp on the toppings, and the crust wasn’t overly crispy or soggy. As a lover of all things spicy, I was slightly disappointed that my pizza wasn’t quite as spicy as I had expected. However, what was lacking in heat was made up for with flavor. I complemented my lunch with a cold Hoepfner Hefeweisen, which is brewed locally in nearby Karlsruhe.

The service was friendly and attentive. The wait staff spoke excellent English; however, the menus are in German. The dinner menu includes inventive Mediterranean dishes, as well as local cuisine. There is plenty of outdoor seating, so you can relax and enjoy a beautiful view of the Neckar River. Reichskrone is a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a simple menu and food that is fresh and delicious.
