Beer tasting and hiking go hand-in-hand this weekend at the inaugural Enkenbach-Alsenborn Kulinarische Bierwanderung. Beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 20 and 10 a.m. Sunday, May 21, taste your way through 7 kilometers of hoppy goodness and fantastic eats.

What to know

Where you’re going. The 7-kilometer-long loop trail begins next to the swimming pool on Dr. Leo-Dietzler-Platz in Enkenbach-Alsenborn. You’ll wander your way through the lush hills and valleys surrounding the village. There is plenty of parking near the starting point, or if you’re planning to partake in beer tasting, public transportation is easily accessible. Furry friends are welcome but must remain on a leash.

Bring cash. There is a hiking fee of 3 euros, and a beer pass is available for 8 euros, which includes a souvenir mug. You can purchase the hiking and beer passes at the beginning of the hike. Each refill is 2 euros, so bring smaller change that you’ve been looking to use up.

Bring your appetite. There are six stations along the route. Each one will have different breweries — including Karlsberg, Bischoff, Bitburger, Park & Bellheimer, Lausitzer Porter and Erdinger — and phenomenal food offerings. Feeling nostalgic for some BBQ? Stop at station two for some smoked pulled pork from Big Boys Barbeque. Or take a breather at station three for a taste of Grandma’s homemade beer goulash and freshly-made noodles. Stop by station six for deliciously sweet treats.

Expand your beer taste buds. While several larger breweries will be on site, many local, smaller brewers will also be present. If you’ve been wanting to sample specialty beers or exclusive seasonal, craft-type brews, this is a great opportunity to try them out.

You don’t have to be a beer lover. If you’re not a beer aficionado, there are still plenty of options available. There will be schnapps tasting courtesy of Prinzbrennerei Prinz, as well as delicious coffee creations from the Coffee-Bike.
