Get tickets now for Berlin Airlift 70th anniversary celebrations
Celebrations commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift will take place in four German cities and airfields associated with the momentous endeavor June 10-16. For troops and families based in southwest Germany, the festivities taking place on Clay Kaserne Airfield in Wiesbaden on June 10 are sure to hold enormous appeal. To ensure you’re part of this historical event, it’s essential to secure your tickets beforehand.
The event which is open to both U.S. military I.D. card holders and the public at large is a joint endeavor of the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden and the city of Wiesbaden. Germans, Americans and guests from other countries can look forward to the presence of around 40 vintage aircraft, including many which participated in the airlift itself. At this event, you’ll find static and aerial displays, food and drink, live music playing sounds of the era, souvenir stands and much more.
Program highlights on the event scheduled to run 9:30 a.m.-8 p.m. include precision parachute demonstrations and simulated candy drops from 10 a.m. and once again from 3 p.m., the official welcoming remarks at 1:15 p.m., and the Berlin Airlift Memorial Service at 1:45 p.m.
DOD I.D. card holders wishing to attend the festivities on June 10 are advised to go through their chains of command or to contact their nearest MWR for tickets. While the tickets are free, they’re essential for would-be attendees of all ages. Note that no guest sign-ins will be allowed at the Clay Kaserne Welcome Center on the day.
Those without DOD I.D. cards can learn more about the 70 Jahre Berliner Luftbrücke and obtain tickets at the Wiesbaden Tourist Information point. Alternately, tickets can be ordered online, although you’ll need a smattering of German to do it. These tickets for the public are sold at a cost of 5 euros adults and 2 euros for children ages 7-12. Once ordered and paid for by credit card, the tickets are sent as an attachment to your email address.
With tickets secured, the next battle will be gaining access to the base on event day. DOD I.D. card holders with vehicle placards obtained from their units or organizations will be able to access Clay Kaserne in their privately-owned vehicles through the south access control point. The June 11 event is open to DOD I.D. card holders and prearranged school groups only. No tickets are needed.
