St. Leonhard’s Procession

In Bavaria, the end of every farming year is celebrated with a jovial horseback procession through the village streets to honor the patron saint of livestock, St. Leonhard. Traditional music, beautifully decorated carriages, hundreds of horses and villagers in costume accompany the pilgrimage to St. Leonhard’s chapel. Young men also look forward to the whip cracking (Goaßlschnalzer) competition, which determines who swings the straps best.

Held only once every two years, Tirol’s International Käsiade is a cheese and dairy extravaganza organized by market professionals to determine the cream of the crop in the world of milk, butter and fromage. Points are awarded based on the quality of the exterior, interior, texture, small and taste. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to the cheese makers and dairy professionals with the finest products. Best of all, spectators can join in the fun by sampling the submissions.
