East meets west at Hyper Japan Festival
Sushi and sake lovers rejoice! The Hyper Japan Festival is once again taking London by storm. Now in its eighth year, this fantastic event transforms the well-known Tobacco Dock into a smattering of cosplay, quirky characters, delicious food and drinks, and much more.
Popular game-maker Nintendo will be showcasing many new games and up and coming technologies. Take a break from reality and morph yourself into an anime character at the virtual reality experience. Curious about cosplay? Now’s your chance to try it out! All ages and levels are welcome. If you’ve got serious game, enter in the cosplay parade and contest. Or take part in learning Japanese traditions, such as calligraphy and the beautiful art of Ikebana.
What would a festival be without tasty food and drinks? Sample delicious Japanese and Japanese-fusion dishes from one of the food trucks, or at the food court. Try the savory sushi burger (which replaces hamburger buns with sticky rice), or tender gyoza dumplings made with fresh seafood. Check out the Kikkoman Sushi Competition as chefs battle it out to see who is the ultimate sushi chef. Sake aficionados won’t want to miss out on the ever-popular sake tasting. For 15 British pounds, you can chat with sake brewers and learn the art of making the highly-potent fermented rice drink. Reserve your tickets ahead of time — this event sells out quickly.
The Hyper Japan Festival opens from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 3:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. For more information regarding ticket prices or to purchase in advance, visit hyperjapan.co.uk.
